A trilogy of trilogies
The Star Wars movies and animated films are part of an epic space opera created by George Lucas. Lucas wrote and directed the original Star Wars trilogy, which first appeared in cinemas between 1977 and 1983, and starts somewhere in the middle of the story. These movies first introduced audiences to characters like Leia and Luke Skywalker, Han Solo, Chewbacca, the droids R2-D2 and C-3PO, and of course the Sith Lord Darth Vader. A prequel trilogy was released between 1999 and 2005, telling the story of how the Galactic Republic was overthrown and replaced with the autocratic Galactic Empire by Palpatine, Darth Sidious. The sequel trilogy (2015-2019) follows the Resistance as they fight the First Order, the successor of the Galactic Empire.
