Spiderman is the superhero alter ego of nerdy high school student Peter Parker, an orphaned teenager who lives in New York with his aunt, May Parker. As a result of a laboratory accident, Peter is bitten by a radioactive spider, which gives him amazing arachnid powers. He becomes stronger, quicker, can shoot spiderwebs from his wrists, and his hands and feet stick to walls and other surfaces allowing him to climb just like a spider.
Spiderman broke new ground when he first appeared in the 60s because he was a teenage superhero who operated on his own, without a grown-up mentor figure. Previously, teenage superhero characters had only appeared in comics as sidekicks to adult established heroes. As Spiderman, Peter Parker doesn’t just have to handle supervillains, but also has to deal with high school bullies, homework, never having enough money, and his crush on Mary Jane Watson.
The recent Spider-Verse movie introduced new fans to a whole set of different Spiderman characters from a range of alternate universes, like Spiderman Noir, Miles Morales, and Spider-Gwen.
