Five Night’s at Freddy’s (FNAF) is a series of terrifying point-and-click survival horror games developed by game designer Scott Cawthon. The games revolve around a family pizza restaurant and entertainment hall called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. By day, it’s a fun place where families are entertained by singing and dancing animatronic dolls. But recently, by night, it seems like there’s something not quite right with the puppets. They seem to be malfunctioning in unsettling ways, activating when they should be switched off - twitching, opening their eyes, and even vanishing only to reappear elsewhere. Usually closer by. Because when they move, they seem to move with a purpose... Maybe when you took on your new job as a night security guard at Freddy’s you ought to have paid attention to that odd disclaimer in the small print: “Fazbear Entertainment is not responsible for death or dismemberment.”
The first FNAF game appeared in 2014, and was followed by great number of successful sequels and spin-offs. Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza is a scary old building with a faulty generator, so there’s not enough power to keep the lights, all of the security cameras, and the electronic doors running all night. The gameplay revolves around strategically using your limited resources to monitor and ward off the animatronics without losing power. However, it’s the oppressive atmosphere that makes the game genuinely scary. Everything about the game’s design is calculated to create a pervasive sense of dread. The design of Freddy Fazbear, Foxy, Chica, Bonnie, Circus Baby and the rest of the animatronics is properly nightmarish, and when the dolls start to malfunction and move about it really is unnerving.
The first three games of the main story focus on Freddy’s Pizza. In the first two games, you’ve been lured into taking on a night security job there, and each episode presents new tools, restrictions, and challenges. The third game takes place thirty years after the closure of the original Freddy’s restaurant. Faded to a vaguely-remembered urban legend, someone has come up with the idea to create a venue based on the old stories about Freddy’s pizzeria. Things soon take a turn for the worst when a thrilling discovery is unearthed: a complete model of an original Freddy’s animatronic! In the fourth instalment, evil has followed you home and a horrific invasion of nightmare puppets is clawing at your bedroom door...!
There are lots of other great spin-offs and tributes to the FNAF series, and on this page we’ve collected some games that will allow you to get acquainted with this urban horror story and its sinister cast of killer animatronics.
